is Samsreef.com? Well... this is my home page, sounding board, idea box, blog... whatever you would like to call it. I keep aquariums (for about 30 years now) and would like to share some of my journey. If you are interested in the aquarium hobby you are probably in a good place. Check out My Aquariums to see the tanks I currently have running or browse my Gallery for photos.
This is the second HD video I have done. This one features the 125g reef tank again. I like the music in this one as well as the better control I had over the visuals with exposure.
After wrestling with the entirely new HDV video workflow I managed to get this quickie video done and working in HD on YouTube! It will not play in HD here in embedded form but you can watch it full size and crystal clear on YouTube. Click the "watch in HD" link. Note that this video was shot in October 2008.
My original equipment list is a bit different than this one. I had much different ideas for my tank and have taken a turn towards focusing on SPS corals. The fish have become a secondary but still loved part of the reef.
Here is the complete list of equipment now on my tank.
Here are all of the full tank shots from the beginning to now. This covers from May 2007 when I first added fish and corals to August 2008 over a year later. This are starting with oldest shot from over a year ago and getting newer as you go down the page...
Pushing the limits of my Powershot A-620's video capabilities. This video thing is starting to become more fun! I shot some macro video of some of my favorite corals in my 125g reef tank. This also shows more of the fish in the reef. Hope you enjoy the new video.
This is my upgrade protein skimmer. This is the largest skimmer I could find that would fit in my current sump - Octopus NW-200. The 12" x 12" first chamber is still a snug fit. The performance on this skimmer is good. Check out the foam head that is rising in this video.
Two months worth of nitrate and phosphate eating bacteria, bacteria food, a coral food, strontium and iodine all in one little box!
I have decided to try Prodibio on my 125g reef tank. Prodibio is probiotic style reefing additive set that uses certain strains of bacteria along with a bacteria food, an overall coral broadcast food, strontium and iodine. These additives come packed in little glass vials in a plastic case so they are unique in they way they are packaged. The glass vials are sealed and nitrogen flushed to preserve the liquids inside from contaminants.
This method is not unlike Zeovit or Polyp Labs Reefresh or Ultralith or even DIY method with vodka dosing or even using bio-spira/cycle. These methods seek to reduce nutrients in the form of dissolved organics, nitrate, phosphate to very low levels. These methods introduce beneficial bacteria into the system or introduce a fuel source for the bacteria presently in the system to consume nitrates, phosphates and organics. These create a water born bio-mass that can be removed by your skimmer. This allows increased feedings and hopefully results in better coral coloration with a cleaner environment for your reef animals.
So how much of this stuff do I need to use and what do I hope it accomplishes?
