PAR Readings

PAR...Just how much are you getting?

I have a series of PAR reading tests that I am planning. These are real measurements of usable light intensity in various size aquariums with certain light setups. Check my gallery for the first round of pictures of tanks with the PAR ratings.

Trying something new - Prodibio

Two months worth of nitrate and phosphate eating bacteria, bacteria food, a coral food, strontium and iodine all in one little box!
I have decided to try Prodibio on my 125g reef tank. Prodibio is probiotic style reefing additive set that uses certain strains of bacteria along with a bacteria food, an overall coral broadcast food, strontium and iodine. These additives come packed in little glass vials in a plastic case so they are unique in they way they are packaged. The glass vials are sealed and nitrogen flushed to preserve the liquids inside from contaminants.

This method is not unlike Zeovit or Polyp Labs Reefresh or Ultralith or even DIY method with vodka dosing or even using bio-spira/cycle. These methods seek to reduce nutrients in the form of dissolved organics, nitrate, phosphate to very low levels. These methods introduce beneficial bacteria into the system or introduce a fuel source for the bacteria presently in the system to consume nitrates, phosphates and organics. These create a water born bio-mass that can be removed by your skimmer. This allows increased feedings and hopefully results in better coral coloration with a cleaner environment for your reef animals.

So how much of this stuff do I need to use and what do I hope it accomplishes?

Lighting upgrade for Sam's Reef!

I have taken a fancy to SPS and am hoping a lighting upgrade will help with coral color.
After researching coral coloration and lighting intensity in reef aquariums I came to the conclusion that I wanted to upgrade my lighting system. My current setup is all T5's and does a great job with my soft corals and LPS corals. The problem is since I originally set up my reef tank (almost 1.5 years ago now) I have gotten interested in SPS! Cool

Now of course I have some SPS in my tank under T5's that are doing fairly good. By that I mean that they are growing well and their colors are ok. I would like them to grow well and have great colors and I think this is going to require a lighting increase.

I have had good results with my T5 system and originally planned on having 6 rows of T5's. Well now I am planning something else...

PAR readings - How much light?

How much PAR does this Sundial fixture produce?
So how much PAR does a 150w Sundial produce?

I have a series of PAR reading tests that I would like show the results of. These are real measurements of usable light intensity in various size aquariums with certain light setups. I have an Apogee Instruments Quantum Meter calibrated for electric light sources that reads PAR in µmol m-2 s-1. I want to take all these measurements inside the aquariums I am testing. I feel that this type testing will give numbers that are useful on a hobby level and will be a good reference point for deciding on light systems for aquarium setups.

What the heck is PAR anyway?

How I Manage My Reef Aquarium

ReefKeeper2
I would like to get a controller like this RK2 to automate and contol my aquarium system. This would really provide a new level of stability.
I have been keeping aquariums for a long time. I started when I was young, probably about age 7. My first tank was a goldfish bowl (suprise, suprise) with a Fancy Tail Goldfish. This was about 1975 and the choices for aquariums were the "complicated" setups with airstones, heaters, lighting hoods, thermometers and corner filters. These tanks were typically on display at the local fish store and then there were also the simple aquariums. These simple setups were basically goldfish bowls. I was lucky and had a huge 2 gallon bowl.

Saltwater aquariums? The only saltwater aquarium I remember from these days was the display tank in the gift shop of the Marine Life Oceanarium in Gulfport, Mississippi. I remember seeing the marine life show in the massive hold tanks with the Dolphins on display. The Dolphins would do tricks and jump out of the water to nab some hand-held fish. The Sea Lions would also take some fish.

I later saw the smaller marine aquarium in the gift shop. The first time I saw it was when I was "bitten".

From brown and back again - Color on SPS corals
Written by Sam

Purple Montipora, Blue Staghorn, Green Acro, Pink Millepora...that are all mostly brown. 9-29-06

I have been keeping a small group of SPS (small poly scleractinian) corals for a while. I know that these corals present certain challenges to the aquarium keeper...for one they can loose there nice colors and end up looking mostly brown. I have been able to maintain growth on these corals and they seem mostly healthy...but they are brown. Undecided

I decided that I was going to try and get these corals to "color up". I have some idea of the requirements of SPS and wanted to make a quick list of "the things that I know I know" as far as SPS are concerned. I would like to take these corals to another level and see if I can recover some of the color that they originally had.

The first few things that I wanted to work on improving was the basic environment for the corals:

  • Lighting
  • Flow
  • Water Quality
  • Feeding
